Is Memopryl Safe to Take? Medicines, Side Effects and Who Should Wait

Written by the Memopryl Editorial Desk · Last updated · 8 min read

Quick answerFor a healthy adult who takes no medicine, the main risks look mild, mostly stomach upset. For anyone on prescriptions the answer changes, because Memopryl contains St. John's wort and ginkgo. They can weaken birth control and warfarin or add bleeding risk. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before the first capsule.

Key facts

Key facts

The short list, taken only from the label, the retailer pages and the linked sources.

  • Not for anyone under 18. Pregnant or nursing women should ask a doctor first.
  • St. John's wort speeds up the enzymes that clear many drugs, so those drugs may work less well.
  • With antidepressants or other serotonin drugs it can cause serotonin syndrome, a serious reaction.
  • Ginkgo may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners such as warfarin.
  • Stomach upset is the most common mild effect in ingredient studies.
  • Ingredient amounts are not published, so the strength of any effect cannot be predicted.
  • No supplement is FDA approved, and nothing here is medical advice.

What does safe mean for a capsule with six ingredients?

Safe is not a yes or no label. A capsule can be fine for one adult and a poor idea for another. With Memopryl, the split comes down to one question. Do you take any medicine?

The ingredients are phosphatidylserine, Ginkgo biloba leaf, N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl, St. John's wort, Brahmi (bacopa) and L-glutamine. Two of them, St. John's wort and ginkgo, matter most for safety. The others are linked mainly to mild stomach effects.

No safety study of the finished capsule is published, and its amounts are not published. So the notes below come from studies and health sources on each ingredient alone. They tell you what to ask, not what will happen.

Medicines

Which medicines can St. John's wort weaken?

St. John's wort turns up the liver and gut enzymes that break down drugs. More of the drug is cleared, so less stays in your blood (StatPearls, St. John's Wort). You may feel nothing until the problem the drug was treating comes back.

Built from NCCIH, Memorial Sloan Kettering and StatPearls. Your pharmacist can check drugs not listed here.

Serotonin

What is serotonin syndrome, and what are the warning signs?

It is a reaction to too much serotonin activity. St. John's wort taken with an antidepressant or another serotonin drug is a known trigger (MSKCC, St. John's Wort). It can start within hours of a new product or a dose change.

  • Restless, jumpy or confused feelings
  • A racing heart or high blood pressure
  • Heavy sweating, shivering or goosebumps
  • Muscle twitching, jerking or stiff muscles
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • High fever

Act the same day

If you take a serotonin drug and notice these signs after starting Memopryl, stop the capsules and get medical care the same day. A high fever, stiff muscles, seizures or confusion means call 911.

Bleeding

Does ginkgo raise bleeding risk?

It may, mostly for people who take blood thinners such as warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo). Aspirin and other drugs that slow clotting deserve the same question. Surgery and dental work add their own bleeding risk.

Tell your surgeon, dentist and anesthesia team that you take a product with ginkgo and St. John's wort. Ask them when to stop it beforehand. Do not guess a date. Signs to report include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, easy bruising, dark stools or pink urine.

The biggest ginkgo trial also gives context. It gave 240 mg a day to 3,069 older adults and did not lower dementia rates (DeKosky et al., 2008 (GEM)). So the herb brings a bleeding question without a proven memory payoff in that group.

Mild effects

What mild side effects can the other ingredients cause?

Stomach upset is the most common mild complaint in the studies, and it usually fades when the product is stopped.

Effects come from studies of each ingredient alone. No Memopryl side-effect data is published.

If you have a soy allergy, read the panel on your bottle. The capsule material and the other ingredients are not published here, so the bottle is the guide.

Who waits

Who should not take Memopryl, or should wait for a doctor's yes?

Likely a fit if

  • You are a healthy adult aged 18 or over
  • You take no prescription medicine
  • You have read the panel on your bottle

Ask first or skip it if

  • You are under 18
  • You take birth control, a blood thinner, an antidepressant, or heart, HIV, transplant, seizure, cancer or statin drugs
  • You are pregnant or nursing
  • You have surgery planned
  • You have noticed memory changes

A fuller checklist sits on our who it is for page. Noticeable memory changes need a doctor first. A focus supplement is not a treatment (NIA, memory and aging).

Next steps

What should you do before the first capsule?

  1. Read the panel

Find the serving size, the directions and the other ingredients on your bottle.

  2. Show it to a pharmacist

Bring the bottle or a photo of the panel and a list of everything you take.

  3. Ask three questions

Could it weaken any medicine? Could it raise serotonin or bleeding risk? Should my doctor know?

  4. Protect your skin

Use shade or sunscreen outdoors, as St. John's wort can raise sun sensitivity.

  5. Stop and call if something feels wrong

Call your doctor for bruising, spotting or a rash. Call 911 for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting or sudden confusion.

If you stop for a health reason, the 60-day guarantee does not ask why. Call the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 once you feel settled.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Memopryl safe to take every day?

For healthy adults who take no medicine it may be, but no safety study of the finished capsule is published. Follow the directions on your bottle and check with a pharmacist first if you take any medicine.

Is Memopryl safe with antidepressants?

Do not combine them unless your doctor says yes. St. John's wort with SSRIs or other serotonin drugs can cause serotonin syndrome.

Can Memopryl stop my birth control from working?

It can. St. John's wort can lower hormone levels from birth control pills. Ask your doctor whether you need a backup method.

I take warfarin. Can I use Memopryl?

Only with your doctor's approval and closer blood tests. St. John's wort can weaken warfarin and ginkgo may add to bleeding risk.

What are the common mild side effects?

Stomach upset, such as nausea, cramps or looser stools, is the most common mild effect in ingredient studies. Stop if it lasts.

Should I stop Memopryl before surgery?

Tell your surgeon and dentist you take it and ask when to stop. Ginkgo may raise bleeding risk and St. John's wort changes how many drugs work.

Our view

Our view

Our view: the safety story of Memopryl is really the St. John's wort story. For an adult with an empty medicine cabinet, the risks look small and mostly about stomach comfort. For anyone on a daily prescription, a pharmacist check is not optional.

The missing amounts make this harder. Side effects often depend on dose, and the dose is not published. Interactions with St. John's wort, though, can happen at modest amounts. So the check comes first whatever the panel says.

If you have doubts, skip it. A supplement is never worth risking a medicine your doctor chose for you.
