Do Acetyl-L-Carnitine and L-Glutamine Support Brain Energy? What the Trials Found
Quick answerMemopryl lists N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl and L-glutamine under its brain energy claim. The trial record is weak for both. A Cochrane review of 16 trials found no evidence to recommend acetyl-L-carnitine in dementia, and one 2 g glutamine dose did not help students. Their amounts in Memopryl are not published.

Key facts
The two weakest-evidence ingredients in the formula, read plainly.
- N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl is a salt form of acetyl-L-carnitine, often shortened to ALCAR.
- ALCAR was studied at 1.5 to 3 g a day for 3 to 12 months in people with memory impairment.
- A Cochrane review of 16 trials found no evidence to recommend ALCAR for routine use in dementia.
- At about 3 g a day, ALCAR can cause nausea, cramps, diarrhea and a fishy body odor.
- In 91 students, one 2 g dose of glutamine did not improve learning or reaction time.
- Glutamine is studied mainly for the side effects of cancer treatment, not for memory.
- The amounts of both ingredients in Memopryl are not published.
What does brain energy mean on the Memopryl label?
The bottle says Supports Brain Energy, with an asterisk. It does not mean a coffee-style lift. None of the six named ingredients is a stimulant, and caffeine is not on the named list.
The idea behind the phrase is cell fuel. Carnitine helps cells move fats into the parts that make energy, so a carnitine ingredient fits the story neatly. The question is whether the idea shows up as a result in people. For this pair of ingredients, the answer so far is no.
A neat story and a trial result are different things. This article keeps them apart, whether you searched memopryl brain health or memopryl cognitive support. Neither phrase appears as a claim on the bottle.
What did the acetyl-L-carnitine trials find?
Memopryl lists N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl, and Memopryl doses are not published. It is a salt form of acetyl-L-carnitine. Studies in people with memory impairment used 1.5 to 3 g a day for 3 to 12 months (NIH ODS, Carnitine).
A Cochrane review then pooled 16 trials. It found no evidence to recommend acetyl-L-carnitine for routine use in dementia (Hudson & Tabet, 2003 (Cochrane)). Some single trials looked hopeful, but the pooled picture did not hold up.
| Detail | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Form studied | Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) |
| Daily dose | 1.5 to 3 g |
| Length | 3 to 12 months |
| People | Memory impairment and dementia |
| Pooled result | 16 trials, no evidence to recommend routine use in dementia |
The people studied had memory disease. Memopryl is sold to healthy adults. So the trials do not say much about a worker who wants steadier afternoons.
Can acetyl-L-carnitine cause side effects?
At about 3 g a day, it can cause nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea and a fishy body odor (NIH ODS, Carnitine). Those effects are tied to a high dose. Memopryl's amount is not published, so we cannot say whether a serving comes close.
Memopryl side effects in our sources are mostly of this stomach kind, with St. John's wort and ginkgo adding the medicine concerns. If you notice stomach upset, tell your pharmacist. Stop the capsules if the problem lasts.

What is L-glutamine, and does it help focus?
L-glutamine is one of the most common amino acids in the body. Muscles, the gut and the brain all use it, and it is sold widely as a general supplement.
For memory and focus, the one trial we cite is small. Jongkees and colleagues gave 91 students a single 2 g dose, and it did not improve learning or reaction time (Jongkees et al., 2017). No memory dose has been set for glutamine.
Memorial Sloan Kettering notes that glutamine is studied mainly for side effects of cancer treatment, and that nausea and headache have been reported (MSKCC, Glutamine). Neither point is a reason to avoid it. Both are reasons not to expect a memory effect from it.
Why would a formula include ingredients with weak evidence?
The brand has not said. Our files hold no explanation, and we will not invent one. Every Memopryl supplement ingredient got in for reasons the brand has not shared. Many blends mix ingredients with different levels of support, and a buyer sees only a list of names.
You can still judge a list. Ask three plain questions of each name: is there a trial in healthy adults, is the amount shown, and does it interact with anything you take. For these two, the first answer is no, the second is not yet, and the third is a mild maybe.
How do these two compare with the rest of the formula?
| Ingredient | Human evidence in our sources | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Bacopa (Brahmi) | 46 healthy adults, 12 weeks, better learning | Strongest |
| Phosphatidylserine | 78 adults aged 50 to 69 with complaints, 6 months | Some |
| N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl | 16 trials, no clear benefit in dementia | Weak |
| L-glutamine | One 2 g dose in 91 students, no change | Very weak |
| Ginkgo biloba leaf | 3,069 adults aged 75 and over, no drop in dementia | Weak |
None of this makes the formula useless. It means the claim on the bottle leans on a sound idea more than on strong trials, and that your own weekly log is the best evidence you will get.
What should you look for on the Memopryl panel?
When the bottle arrives, find the lines for N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl and L-glutamine. Write the amounts beside the study doses above.
- If a line shows a single amount, compare it with 1.5 to 3 g for ALCAR.
- If the panel shows one blend total, you cannot split out either ingredient.
- If the amounts look tiny next to the study doses, remember that a low dose is not proof of failure. It is simply not the dose that was studied.
- Photograph the panel and keep it with your order email.
Then show the photo to a pharmacist if you take any prescription. Memopryl also contains St. John's wort and ginkgo, and those two matter more for medicines than these two do (NCCIH, St. John's Wort) (NCCIH, Ginkgo).
Frequently asked questions
Does acetyl-L-carnitine boost brain energy?
Carnitine helps cells use fats for energy, but trials in people with memory problems did not show a clear benefit. A Cochrane review of 16 trials found no evidence for routine use in dementia.
What dose of acetyl-L-carnitine was studied?
1.5 to 3 g a day for 3 to 12 months. Memopryl's amount is not published, so it cannot be compared.
Does L-glutamine help memory?
We found no good evidence that it does. A single 2 g dose did not improve learning or reaction time in 91 students.
Can L-glutamine cause side effects?
Nausea and headache have been reported. Ask a pharmacist if you take medicine.
Is N-acetyl L-carnitine the same as acetyl-L-carnitine?
It is listed as N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl, a salt form of acetyl-L-carnitine. Studies on acetyl-L-carnitine are the closest match we can point to.
Is Memopryl a stimulant?
None of the six named ingredients is a stimulant, and caffeine is not on the named list. Read the other-ingredients line on your own bottle to be sure.
Our view
Our view: these are the two weakest links in the formula, judged by trials. We would not buy Memopryl for them. If the capsule helps you, bacopa is the more likely reason, and even that is a hope and not a promise.
What we like is that the sources let you check this for yourself. The study doses are public, the side effects are named, and your bottle's panel will show the rest. What we do not like is the blank where the amounts should be.
This is general information and not medical advice. Memopryl is not FDA approved, and no dietary supplement is. It does not treat, cure or prevent any disease. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take any medicine.
